After completing a B.Com(Ag) at Lincoln University in the late 80s Richard worked as a A.C Nielsen market research exec before pursuing a love of words and news by completing a certificate in journalism at Auckland Polytechnic.

Three years working for the New Zealand Farmer newspaper cemented his interest in helping farmers understand what was happening in their industry over the tumultuous post-Rogernomics period.

He then share-milked 400 cows in Waikato for eight years with his wife Lauraine, before taking a trip to the other end of the food producing spectrum, owning award winning Hamilton restaurant Tables on the River for three years.
